At a glance
| Trama | Zapier | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | On your Mac, in the background. | In the cloud, on Zapier’s servers. |
| How you build | Describe it in plain English; Trama builds the steps and shows them for review. | Pick a trigger app and action apps in a web editor; Zapier also offers AI help to draft a Zap. |
| What can start it | Copying text, a keyboard shortcut, selected text, a schedule, a screenshot, a file in a folder, an app opening, a calendar event, a webhook. | An event in a connected web app (a new email, row, form entry…), a schedule or a webhook. |
| Your Mac | Reads the clipboard and selections, runs OCR, controls Mac apps with AppleScript, runs shell scripts — any script that changes files or sends data is shown to you and needs your approval first. | No access to your Mac without extra software. |
| Connected services | Gmail, Google Calendar, Sheets, Docs and Drive, Slack, GitHub, Notion, Linear, Jira, Trello, Airtable, Telegram, Discord, any HTTP API — MCP servers from the public registry on Pro, and any server by its address on Max. | Thousands of web apps. |

| When your Mac is off | Nothing runs until it is back on. | Keeps running. |
| Pricing | Free plan; Pro $10/month; Max $18/month. Runs on your Mac are unlimited; integration steps have daily limits. | Free plan and paid tiers, priced by the number of tasks run each month. |

When Zapier is the better choice
- The whole job lives in web apps — a form entry creates a CRM contact and a Slack message — and nothing on your computer is involved.
- It must run at 3am on a Sunday whether or not your laptop is open.
- You need an app Trama does not connect to yet, and it is among the thousands Zapier supports.
- A whole team shares and maintains the same automations.
When Trama is the better choice
- The task starts with something you do on your Mac: copying text, selecting a paragraph, taking a screenshot, pressing a shortcut, saving a file.
- The result should land on your Mac: on the clipboard, typed into the app you are in, in a notification, in Apple Notes or Reminders.
- You tried building a Zap and gave up. In Trama you write “Every Friday at 5pm, summarize what I closed in Linear and post it to #team on Slack” and review what it built.
- You want the content of your automations to stay on your Mac, and AI calls to go straight to the provider you chose.
Using both
They do not compete for the same job. Keep cloud-to-cloud Zaps in Zapier and automate the Mac side with Trama — a Trama automation can even hand its result to a Zap by calling the Zap’s webhook from an HTTP step.
Questions
Is Trama a Zapier alternative?
For automations that involve your Mac, yes. Trama runs on your Mac, so it can react to what you copy, select or screenshot and deliver results into Mac apps — things a cloud tool cannot reach. For automations that live entirely between web apps and must run with your computer off, Zapier is the better fit.
Do I need to know how to code to use Trama?
No. You describe what you want in plain English, Trama builds the steps, explains them, and nothing runs until you switch it on.
Can Trama run when my Mac is asleep?
No. Trama runs on your Mac, so scheduled automations need it on and awake at that time.
